Bought a used car in the Netherlands and taking it home? Before it leaves, it is deregistered for export in the Dutch vehicle register. We do this at our RDW-approved export desk at Slachthuisweg 135 in Hengelo. You leave with the export certificate in your name, and the Dutch seller leaves with proof that the registration has stopped.
We are an RDW-approved export company, not the RDW. According to the RDW, a vehicle can be exported at RDW inspection stations, at RDW desks and at approved export companies such as ours. The RDW describes the process in English on its page about exporting a vehicle.
What to bring
Have everything ready before you set off. With complete documents, a standard desk request is usually ready in about 15 minutes.
Checklist
- Valid passport, ID card or driving licence of the person the export is registered to
- The Dutch registration card (kentekencard) with its registration code (tenaamstellingscode), or the old paper parts (part 1B and the transfer certificate)
- The Dutch yellow number plates (one plate for a motorcycle, scooter, moped, caravan or trailer)
- The current mileage
- The full foreign address of the buyer
- For insurance and plates: start date, destination and route, plus details of the policyholder and the driver
Source: RDW. For a business buyer we also need the company name, address and VAT number.
The yellow plates are handed in at deregistration. If they are lost, new plates have to be made first by an approved number plate manufacturer.
Deregistration at the desk, step by step
- You show the ID of the person the export is registered to.
- You hand over the registration card (kentekencard) with its registration code, or the old paper parts: part 1B (tenaamstellingsbewijs) and the transfer certificate (overschrijvingsbewijs).
- The yellow Dutch plates go on the desk; they are handed in.
- You give the current mileage and the buyer's full address abroad.
- We deregister the vehicle for export.
- One corner of the registration card is cut off, the documents are handed out and you pay, in cash or by bank transfer.
Who gets which document
| Who | Receives | What it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Buyer, or the person the export is registered to | Export certificate (kentekenbewijs deel II) and the clipped registration card | Keep for registration abroad |
| Seller | Vrijwaringsbewijs | Proof that the Dutch registration has stopped |
How the transfer works when you buy from a Dutch seller
In the Netherlands, the car is not first transferred to the foreign buyer's name. The RDW says: make sure the buyer exports the vehicle in his or her own name. So the export certificate is issued in your name and the seller gets the vrijwaringsbewijs. That is the whole transfer, done in one visit to the desk.
Registering the car at home
Keep the original papers safe. Two examples:
- Germany: according to the ADAC, the registration office (Zulassungsstelle) asks for the original foreign vehicle papers, an insurance confirmation (eVB), proof of purchase and proof of a valid HU, the German roadworthiness test, among other things. Without the original foreign papers, registration is nearly impossible.
- Poland: according to gov.pl, a vehicle brought in from abroad is registered within 30 days of entering Poland. You need the foreign registration document (for a Dutch car: the export certificate plus the registration card), proof of ownership, proof that excise duty has been paid and a technical inspection, among other things.
Other countries have their own rules, so check with the registration authority at home before you travel.
Price
The export document costs from €50, including the export certificate, the vrijwaringsbewijs and processing with the RDW. Outside office hours, for postal delivery and for heavy or non-standard vehicles, the price can be higher.
| Service | Included | From |
|---|---|---|
| Export document | Export certificate, vrijwaringsbewijs (indemnification certificate) and RDW processing | €50 |
| Export insurance + white plates | 14 days liability cover, Green Card and white export plates | €100 |
| Complete export package | Export document, vrijwaringsbewijs, 14 days liability cover, Green Card and plates | €150 |
| Export insurance extension | 14 extra days of liability cover with a Green Card, requested online (per 14 days) | €120 |
When can the price be higher?
- All amounts are starting prices, including VAT where applicable.
- A surcharge may apply outside office hours. Office hours: Monday to Saturday 10:00 to 16:30.
- Postal delivery costs more, especially international shipping.
- The price can differ per vehicle, for example for heavy or non-standard vehicles.
- You always know the price in advance.
Driving or transporting the car
Driving the car home? Then it needs Dutch export plates and temporary export insurance. After deregistration you may drive on Dutch public roads for 14 days, but not beyond the APK expiry date. If the car goes on a trailer or car transporter, that vehicle usually needs no driving insurance, but the export document is still required.
Can't come in person? Prepare the request online and send the yellow plates by post or courier. We start once they arrive and send the documents back insured and with tracking, also abroad. Postal delivery costs more, and we confirm the price in advance.
Tip: exporters can sometimes reclaim part of the BPM, a Dutch vehicle tax, from the Belastingdienst. We do not offer this as a service; the conditions are on the Belastingdienst page on BPM refunds.
What can go wrong
- ID of the wrong person. It must belong to the person the export is registered to.
- No yellow plates. They have to be handed in, so bring them.
- Incomplete foreign address. We need the buyer's full address abroad.
- Deregistering too early. If the car is driven out, the 14 days start at deregistration, so plan it close to departure.

Frequently asked questions
Is the export certificate the same as registration certificate part II?
Yes. The export certificate is also known as kentekenbewijs deel II, registration certificate part II. It comes with the registration card that has one corner cut off.
Can my company name be put on the export certificate?
Only at an RDW location. An approved export company like ours cannot do this, so if you need a company name on the certificate, go to the RDW.
Can someone else arrange the export for me?
If the buyer cannot come to the Netherlands, the RDW allows a contact person in the Netherlands to arrange the export. Contact us beforehand so we can go through the details.
What stops for the Dutch seller after export?
According to the RDW, the Dutch owner's insurance obligation, APK obligation and motor vehicle tax stop after export. The vrijwaringsbewijs is the seller's proof that the registration has ended.
